Hill Close Victorian Gardens

The Margetts Family Garden

The firm of Margetts, Auctioneers, Surveyors and Appraisors, was founded by John Margetts in 1806. John's father Richard, and his older brother, also Richard, had also been surveyors, but John had the ambition to move into the business of an auctioneer.

After his death in 1838, the company was run by his sons, John II, William Bryan (who outlived all his children and died in 1848)  and George Bryan.

John Margetts II may have known Hill Close Gardens from and early time. When they were offered for sale in 1865, it was Margetts who surveyed, planned advertised and conducted the sale. Shortly afterwards, we find him renting one of the plots and soon after that, he bought Plot 11, which remained in the family until around 1980.
